Multi-process Collaborative Robotic Welding And Cutting With THG MultiMode

Traditional robotics capability. Collaborative simplicity.

THG MultiMode combines MIG, TIG, laser, or plasma welding, or even cutting, using a single UR robot and interchangeable torch setup. You can change the tools manually or automatically. Switch between welding and cutting processes without moving the part or resetting the cell.

Combine any THG welding or cutting process (e.g., MIG and TIG)

Use a single power source (for MIG, TIG, and plasma welding)

1 Robot

Maximize the robotic welding and floor space value. Use the right welding process for each part on one robotic platform.

2 Options

Manual or automatic tool changing. With an auto tool changer, the robot can run multiple processes autonomously.

MIG + TIG

Run MIG, TIG, or plasma welding from one power source, or add LightWELD for arc and laser welding in one cell.

Two Processes. One Robotic Cell.

You don’t always need or want to get a second robot for the second welding or the cutting process. THG MultiMode is the solution. Two processes, one cell, and one robot.

THG MultiMode Add-On

THG MultiMode Add-On

MultiMode enables a THG robotic cell to switch between different welding and cutting processes like MIG and TIG. Or MIG and plasma cutting. The cobot uses the selected torch and program, with manual or automatic tool changing. One process runs at a time.

Like many other THG systems and features, THG made MultiMode to answer real-world manufacturing demands. Our customers frequently asked for multi-process robotic welding and cutting, and we created MultiMode.

THG MultiMode Features:

One Universal Robots cobot

Use any combination of THG-supported processes. Even welding + cutting.

A compatible shared power source (or two power sources)

Manual or automatic tool-change integration

Saves capital and floor space

Available as a factory build or retrofit

Choose the Process Each
Manufacturing Step Requires

Keep mixed-process work on a shared robotic system. Many manufacturing jobs require multi-process welding or cutting on the same part. Now, you don’t need another robot or to move parts between cells.

Different Welds on One Part

Use TIG where the joint calls for precise arc control and MIG where deposition and travel speed suit the work.

Root, Fill, and Cap

For suitable pipe procedures, run a TIG root followed by MIG fill and cap. You can also use advanced MIG processes like CMT.

Weld Large Parts

Forget about having to move parts between cells due to a process difference. Just do both processes in one cell.

Add Cutting to Welding

Use plasma or oxy-fuel cutting to bevel or otherwise prepare the parts. Then, use MIG or another process to weld them.

Welding And Cutting Process Combinations

THG MultiMode supports any combination of our supported welding and cutting processes. The examples below show how different configurations can combine process strengths in one robotic cell.

Example Combination
Process Equipment
Why Combine Them?
MIG + TIG
1 Fronius iWave
Use MIG for deposition and speed, then TIG where precision, fit-up, appearance, or procedure requirements matter more.
MIG + Plasma Welding
1 Fronius iWave
Use MIG for productive fill welding and plasma for concentrated heat, deeper penetration, and reduced weld preparation.
TIG + Plasma Welding
1 Fronius iWave
Use TIG for precision, fillets, and greater gap tolerance; plasma for penetration, travel speed, and keyhole welding.
MIG + Laser Welding
Fronius + IPG LightWELD
Use MIG for conventional joints and filler-heavy work, then laser where high speed and low heat input better suit the part.
TIG + Laser Welding
Fronius + IPG LightWELD
Combine controlled TIG welding with high-speed, low-heat laser welding without moving the part to another robotic cell.
Plasma Welding + Laser Welding
Fronius + IPG LightWELD
Use plasma where penetration and process tolerance matter, then laser where speed and minimal heat input are priorities.
MIG + Plasma Cutting
Fronius + Hypertherm
Cut, trim, or prepare part features with plasma. Then MIG weld the same part in one cell.
TIG + Plasma Cutting
Fronius + Hypertherm
Combine precision TIG welding with robotic profile cutting, trimming, or joint preparation on the same platform.
Laser + Plasma Cutting
IPG LightWELD + Hypertherm
Combine high-speed laser welding with robotic plasma cutting for parts requiring both joining and profile cutting. This can be especially useful for sheet metal with Hypertherm’s FineCut cartridges.
MIG + Oxy-Fuel Cutting
Fronius + IHT
Bevel or cut thick carbon steel with oxy-fuel, then change tools and MIG weld without moving the workpiece.

These are only examples. MultiMode is process-agnostic and can combine any supported THG welding or cutting processes.

Customer Testimonials

Results From the Shop Floor

“That piece, it’s like 2 hours on the bench for a guy, and it’s 8 minutes with the cobot. The consistency is there. The heat-affected zone is perfect.”

Matt Funkhouser – Owner, Funkhouser Racecars

“We chose THG Automation over other providers because they were willing to stick around and solve these challenges with us. We had another robotic laser welding system in-house before, and we didn’t have that support. Now we have three systems from THG.”

Bryan Montez – Plant Manager, West Coast Manufacturing

“Our welders were able to get hands-on almost immediately. It was easy to learn, easy to program, and a huge help in reducing repetitive strain on our team.”

Caleb Thomas – Head of Tech Development, Pik Rite

“Welding aluminum was one of our biggest challenges, as it was all TIG welded by hand before. With fixtures, we are able to weld everything in one shot now.”

Nick Ogle – Robotic Specialist, Raymath

“We were impressed enough that we decided to purchase 10 of them by the end of the year and started by purchasing six.”

Darryl Floyd – President, Wood-Mizer

Common Questions

What is THG MultiMode?

MultiMode is THG Automation’s platform for combining multiple welding and/or cutting processes in a single robotic cell using a UR cobot, a single or two power sources, and a tool changer.

Which welding and cutting processes can THG MultiMode combine?

THG MultiMode can combine any THG-supported process, including MIG, TIG, plasma welding, laser welding, plasma cutting, and oxy-fuel cutting. Configure two or more processes around the parts your shop produces.

Does MultiMode use one welding power source?

It depends on the process combination. A compatible Fronius iWave can run MIG, TIG, and plasma welding from one power source. Laser welding, plasma cutting, oxy-fuel cutting, and other configurations use their respective process equipment on the same robotic platform.

Can MultiMode combine welding and cutting in the same robotic cell?

Yes. MultiMode can pair welding with oxy-fuel or plasma cutting. For example, the robot can bevel or prepare a part with oxy-fuel or plasma, change tools, and then weld it without moving the part to another cell.

Does MultiMode change tools automatically?

It can. THG offers manual and automatic tool-changing configurations. Automatic tool changing lets the cobot switch processes as part of the programmed job without operator intervention.

Can MultiMode use different processes on the same part?

Yes. One programmed job can use different processes for different operations. For example, the robot can make a TIG root pass, automatically switch to MIG, and complete the fill passes.

Do multiple processes run at the same time?

No. The cobot uses one tool and process at a time. MultiMode changes tooling and process settings between operations while keeping the part and robotic cell in place.

Can MultiMode be added to an existing THG system?

Yes, compatible THG systems can support MultiMode.
