Meeting Demand Without Compromise: Why Pik Rite Turned to Cobot Welding
Pik Rite, a trailblazer in manufacturing high-quality agricultural and industrial equipment out of Lewisburg, PA, recently partnered with THG Automation to integrate one of their collaborative robotic welding systems into their workflow, and the results have been transformative.
With demand increasing and a shortage of skilled welders, the Pik Rite team needed a solution to increase throughput, improve consistency, and protect the craftsmanship they’re known for. Enter THG Automation, a company dedicated to making robotic welding automation more accessible by productizing advanced features into user-friendly, “plug-and-play” systems.
Discovering THG Automation: A Trade Show Connection That Sparked Change
Caleb Thomas, Pik Rite’s Head of Technology Development, discovered THG Automation at the world-renowned FABTECH trade show.
“Our welders were able to get hands-on almost immediately,” he shared. “It was easy to learn, easy to program, and a huge help in reducing repetitive strain on our team.”
Built around a Universal Robots collaborative robot and Fronius welding technology, the THG Automation system allows Pik Rite to automate high-arc-on-time welds on large assemblies. With advanced capabilities like Coordinated Motion and Multi-Pass welding, Pik Rite’s team can now handle complex weld paths with smooth precision with no in-house robotics expert required.
Advanced Welding Tech Without the Complexity
The system runs on THG’s proprietary software, giving operators the ability to record, reuse, and fine-tune weld paths in real-time. From torch angle to travel direction and positioning, the platform offers intuitive control and seamless adaptability.
“We’ve already completed parts in half the time compared to manual welding,” said Caleb. “It gave us the flexibility to scale production without skipping a beat, and THG Automation’s support has been incredible from start to finish.”
Modular by Design: Scaling Production with Linear Rail Expansion
Pik Rite also demonstrated the system’s modular design by expanding its capabilities with the addition of a linear rail, extending the robot’s reach and further maximizing efficiency.
Supporting People, Not Replacing Them
Beyond increasing output and repeatability, the implementation of THG Automation’s collaborative system allows skilled human welders to focus on more intricate, non-repetitive tasks–bringing out the best in both people and technology.
Despite early concerns that automation might replace jobs, Pik Rite found the opposite to be true.
“This system complements our workforce,” Caleb noted. “It’s helping our team, not replacing them.”
The Result: More Throughput, Less Strain, and a Future-Proof Shop
By embracing smart automation, Pik Rite isn’t just keeping up; they’re future-proofing their operation while maintaining the quality and ingenuity that’s built their reputation.
