Universal Robots’ New UR8 Long Joins THG Automation

THG Automation incorporates the UR8 Long into its welding and cutting systems, bringing customers a new standard in reach, precision, and performance.

[INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, September 10, 2025—] Universal Robots officially unveiled the all-new UR8 Long at FABTECH in Chicago on September 8, marking a significant addition to THG Automation’s welding and cutting portfolio.

“The UR8 Long is a smart robotic arm that can reach farther and do more than ever before. It’s designed to help people and businesses work faster, more safely, and with less physical effort,”  said Jean Pierre Hathout, President of Universal Robots.

Before the UR8 Long, manufacturers needing long reach had to use Universal Robots’ UR20, which is designed for heavy payload applications. However, many THG customers found the UR20’s weight made programming and movement during operation challenging.

“There was a clear need for improvement,” noted Matt Hendey, CEO of THG Automation. “This arm fills a crucial gap in the market and gives our customers the extended reach they need without the weight tradeoffs. It’s another example of Universal Robots’ commitment to meeting the evolving needs of manufacturers worldwide.”

In response to customer feedback, THG announced that beginning August 8, 2025, most high-reach welding and cutting applications will be standardized on the UR8 Long to enhance usability and performance.

“We’ll continue offering the UR20 for applications that require higher payload capacity,” added Hendey. “But for most high-reach welding work, the UR8 Long is the best choice for our systems.”
